Make India economic superpower

By The Assam Tribune

GANGTOK, April 16 President Pratibha Patil today called upon the young generation, particularly graduates, to deliver on the promise of transforming the country into an economic superpower.

We (India) are being called a major emerging economy and the foundation has been laid to make our country an economic power. The present generation of our youths graduating from the universities now must deliver on this promise to make India an economic superpower, she said.

Addressing the maiden convocation of Sikkim University at Saramsa Garden, about 14 kms from here, Patil said universities and other institutes of higher learning educate the students to make them better citizens.

The students, on their part, should take advantage of their education to inspire self-confidence and bring about changes in their lives as well as the lives of other people, she said.

Referring to the Sikkim University, the Himalayan States first Central university set up three years ago, Patil said it has fulfilled a long cherished aspiration of the people to have a higher institution of learning of national level in their own place.

Acknowledging an apparent lack of infrastructure in the Sikkim University, Patil asked the authorities to arrange for the required facilities. PTI

The Sikkim University should also be a platform for bringing the rich local heritage like folk traditions, ancient wisdom and the natural resources to the national and global community, Patil said.

With the UN having declared 2010 as the International Year of Bio-diversity, she asked the university authorities to set up a genetic garden of the States rare, endangered and threatened species in its campus.

Similarly, Sikkim being rich in horticultural crops, the university here should plan to set up a dedicated unit for processing, storage and marketing of horticultural produces, she said. PTI
