NEW DELHI, Feb 8: The Centre on Monday confirmed that a bridge over the Brahmaputra river connecting Majuli and Jorhat at an estimated Rs 925.47 crore has been sanctioned for which bids have been received.

Replying to a question by Ajit Bhuyan in the Rajya Sabha, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari further said that the Inland Waterways Authority of India under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways conducts maintenance dredging for shipping and navigation on the National Waterway-2, the Brahmaputra.

The dredging work is carried out on need basis for smooth navigation of vessels, particularly during the lean season (October to March) where width and depth of the navigation channel is less than the targeted available depth.

Gadkari also said that there is no proposal for construction of highways on both sides of the Brahmaputra.
