JORHAT, Dec 5 - The Majuli district administration on Tuesday handed over possession of 100 bighas of land to the authorities of Majuli Cultural University for construction of buildings of the university, which is scheduled to function from next year.

A district administration official told this newspaper that officials from the Revenue branch officially handed over the land allotted by the government to the university authorities at Manikapathar near Garmur on the Brahmaputra island.

The official informed that the first Vice Chancellor of the university Dr Dambarudhar Nath, and Registrar (in-charge) Naranarayan Nath, who is also the CEO of the Majuli Zila Parishad, were present on the occasion.

The university authorities thereafter entrusted the area to PWD (Buildings) for carrying out construction work of buildings to house the university. Anjan Baruah, assistant executive engineer of the PWD office in Majuli, officially accepted the responsibility.

It may be mentioned here that in June this year, Vice Chancellor Dr Dambarudhar Nath assumed charge in a temporary office provided by the district administration at the office campus of the Majuli Development Block. Dr Nath was given a warm welcome by the people of the island when he arrived to take charge.

The university is expected to start classes from the middle of 2020 by opening four departments, an official source said. The university will be a research-centric one along with focus on languages, literature, heritage, religious studies and cultural activities, the source stated.
