GUWAHATI, June 9 - In a surprise move amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the State health department on Tuesday transferred both the Principal and Superintendent of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

GMCH Superintendent Dr Ramen Talukdar has been transferred to Lakhimpur. He will be replaced by Dr Abhijeet Sarma, who was looking after Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH).

NHM Executive Director Dr Achyut Baishya will be the new Principal of GMCH, replacing Dr Ratna Talukdar.

Joint Director of Medical Education Dr Manoj Choudhury will be the new Executive Director of NHM.

Dr Anupal Sarma, who was at the Kalapahar IDSP hospital, has been given charge of MMCH, a senior health department official said.

GMCH, MMCH and the Kalapahar hospitals were treating COVID-19 patients.

The health department was tight-lipped on the reshuffle and said it was a routine exercise. When asked if the reshuffle had anything to do with negligence of duty, health officials refused to comment.
