Major facelift plan for Agartala mulled

AGARTALA, May 21 � In a major facelift move for Agartala, a Rs 920 crore plan has been envisaged to enhance the civic amenities of the capital.

The Urban Development department is all set to receive about Rs 920 crore to execute several development projects in the days to come. While the 13th Finance Commission has earmarked Rs 200 crore for various development projects for the capital town, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide Rs 300 crore for improvement of urban facilities.

The outlay of the Finance Commission will be spent in the next five years and the ADB project will be operational till 2015, according to official sources.

Besides, the Urban Development department will also receive another hefty amount of Rs 78 crore for extension of drinking water supply in the northern parts of the city.

The Union Ministry of Urban Development has also allocated Rs 262 crore for construction of the proposed 17 km Ring Road. The State Government has envisaged a plan to rehabilitate 2,000 citizens to be affected because of construction of the proposed Ring Road. �The Ministry of Urban Development has already agreed in principle to sanction Rs 80 crore for setting up three housing complexes for the affected families�, said a top official here on Friday.

Sources said that the first installment of ADB project is expected to be received very shortly as the project has already been submitted to the concerned authority. Under the ADB project, water supply and sanitation will be the focus point.

�Once the projects get implemented, the urban facilities will be increased in many folds�, the official claimed. The Left Front is eying to sweep the election of Agartala Municipal Council (AMC) and Nagar Panchayats election slated for December, this year, riding on the success of good works of the Left Front Government.
