SILCHAR, March 3 - Cracking the whip against the sale of illicit liquor, the Excise Department in Cachar district arrested as many as 65 persons from across the district.
A senior official of the Excise Department here said following the deaths caused due to consumption of spurious liquor in Golaghat and Jorhat districts, proactive steps were taken by the department and raids were conducted in remote areas of the district. �Three raids were conducted on February 28 and eight persons were arrested, thereby taking the total tally of arrests to 65 persons and 77 cases were registered in 19 raids conducted since February 22. The Department also seized other items, including 305.35 litres of ID (illicit distilled) liquor, 3530 litres of fermented wash, 19 D/A sets and 3630 litres of IMFL in the raids,� the official informed.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the State Commissioner of Excise has launched a statewide WhatsApp helpline number 94350-52381 on which anyone can inform about foul practices of manufacturing and selling of illicit liquor and directions to the concerned officials have also been given to initiate prompt necessary action.
