Main accused in hit-and-run case surrenders

JALUKBARI, Aug 20 - The main accused in the Maligaon hit-and-run case Abhinash Sharma surrendered before Jalukbari police last night.

On the night of August 14 one Ganesh Rao died on the spot and a few others were injured after being hit by a speeding Wagon-R driven by Abhinash, son of a former judge of the Gauhati High Court. He was said to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs and after committing the crime, had fled the scene. His family later filed an FIR at Bharalu PS stating that the car had been stolen.�

Hundreds of locals and relatives of the deceased had assembled in front of the Jalukbari PS on the night of the incident demanding justice for Ganesh.�Coming under pressure from the public, the police later summoned the accused to the police station.

Ponjit Duara, ACP, Jalukbari told The Assam Tribune that Abhinash was arrested and granted bail. His statements were�recorded and he also underwent medical tests.�It was a bailable case.
