Mahasangha against permanent detention camps for foreigners

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 15 - The Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha has opposed the idea of constructing permanent detention camps in the State to lodge the people identified as foreign nationals by the Foreigners' Tribunals.

In a statement issued here today, the Mahasangha said if the government constructs permanent detention camps, it will ultimately result in making Assam a suitable grazing ground for the foreigners. The children being born to these people at the detention camps would later get a chance to claim themselves to be the Indian citizens by birth, said the statement.

It reminded the Centre that all other countries in the world expel the foreigners from their soil as soon as they are detected. But here, the Indian government by lodging the foreigners at the permanent detention camps would treat them as the country's guests, which is detrimental to the sovereignty of the country, said the Mahasangha.
