Mahanta visits trouble-torn Namsai

By correspondent

TINSUKIA, Oct 31 Opposition leader of State Assembly Prafulla Kumar Mahanta along with a team of AGP MLAs consisting of Pradip Hazarika of Amguri and Anup Phukan of Tingkhong and some other top leaders of AGP visited the trouble-torn Namsai and Mahadevpur of Lohit district in Arunachal Pradesh today to take stock of the situation.

On his return, Mahanta met the mediapersons at district AGP office here and expressed deep concern about the future of the non-tribal people living in that adjacent district of Tinsukia. He opined that the demands for Permanent Residential Certificate of those people living there since independence is just and should be abided by the Arunachal Pradesh Government.

In his interactions with both tribal and non-tribal people of both Namsai and Mahadevpur of same district of Arunachal Pradesh, he found that the entire episode had developed out of some misunderstandings. The local tribal students union told him that they were not opposing the issue of PRC to the non-tribal people who have been living in the area for years together but it was the work of a section of media which has exaggerated the actual happenings.

Mahanta also met the victims of violence staying in relief camps at Namsai. Though the Arunachal Government had promised some assistance to these people, till now they have not received any relief. He also stated that his party was very much concerned over the trouble in the neighbouring State for which age-old bonds among the various ethnic groups would be jeopardized. He hoped that the Arunachal Government would settle the matter properly.
