JORHAT, Oct 27 - State Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta arrived on a two-day visit to Majuli on Friday to take stock of the condition of the embankments in the Brahmaputra river island.
A Majuli district administration official said on Saturday evening that the Minister, accompanied by the Majuli Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kairi, Superintendent of Police Hitesh Chandra Ray and senior officials of the Water Resources Department, visited erosion-affected areas and vulnerable portions of the embankments.
The officials said Mahanta inspected the Bongaon section of the Haldhibari-Besamara embankment. It may be mentioned that the said portion of the embankment was severely breached by flood waters during the deluge that hit the river island during the rainy season earlier this year.
However, the departmental staff with the support of the local people carried out repair works on an emergency mode.
The Minister directed the departmental officials to prepare schemes to undertake strengthening measures of the embankments, the official stated.
Mahanta then visited the embankment at Afalamukhghat and inspected the vulnerable portions and asked his departmental staff to carry out all repair and strengthening works of the embankment in the said area.
The Minister along with the DC and SP of Majuli also had tea in a kiosk at Afalamukhghat during his visit to the area. He subsequently travelled to Nimatighat in Jorhat and headed for Guwahati.
