Magisterial probe ordered into illegal liquor deaths

TINSUKIA, Sept 25 - The District Magistrate of Tinsukia, Oinam Sarankumar Singh has ordered a magisterial enquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of five persons after consuming country liquor on the evening of September 21 and 23 at Talap Tea Estate under Doomdooma Police Station.

The District Magistrate deputed Additional District Magistrate Gurnail Singh on September 24 to probe the incident and file his report within seven days.

It may be mentioned that on the evening of September 21, some persons of the tea garden consumed illicit country liquor at a shop, following which one Jiten Tanti died on the spot. The other sick persons were rushed to a tea garden hospital from where the serious ones were again referred to hospitals at Tinsukia and Dibrugarh.

Out of all the ailing persons, Papu Thakur, Biswaath Teli, David Kashyap and Santosh Karmakar subsequently died.

It may be mentioned that illicit country liquor is being sold in most tea gardens and other areas of the district without facing any problem from the police or Excise Department.

Swachhata Hi Sewa: Under the fortnight-long Swachhata Hi Sewa mission that was launched on September 15 last, various related events have been organised in Tinsukia district.

Cleanliness drives were conducted at 85 Gaon Panchayats under seven development blocks of the district by the Zila Parishad. The premises of the GPs were cleaned during the drive with the participation of members of the respective GPs, CEO of Zila Parishad, Block Development Officers, etc. Cleanliness drive and awareness programmes were also organised in all the Anganwadi centres of the district on different dates.

As part of the mission, drawing competitions on cleanliness were organised by the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan unit of the district in the schools under Hapjan, Margherita, Kakopathar, Sadiya and Urban Tinsukia Education blocks of the district.
