GUWAHATI, March 10 - City-based cultural organisation Damama is organising a dhol-based festival at the District Library here tomorrow evening, on the occasion of the death anniversary of dhol maestro Maghai Oja, who made Bihu dhol, the Assamese drum played on the occasion of Bihu, popular worldwide. The festival is named Damama Mahotsava-2017.

On the occasion, a special programme Dholot chapar mari will be held in which ten types of dhols, including the Kham drum of the Bodos and the Rabhas, the Dum dum drum of the Misings, Pati Khram drum of the Tiwas, Dholak drum of the Hajongs, Chengk drum of the Karbis, Joydhol and Dhepadhol from Sipajhar, Dhol drum of the Sonowals and Bihu dhol would be played in unison. This programme will be held under the direction of Bihu bhol expert from Silapathar Simanta Tamuly.

The artistes from these tribal and non-tribal groups would also play their individual ethnic drums independently to add colour to the function, which is planned for two-hour duration.

Ten young Bihu dhol players will also play some unique chalanas and khonra chheos of the Bihu dhol in a group. Some of these chalanas and khonra chheos will be new to many people here, said the organisers.
