GUWAHATI, June 29 - Following incidents of landslide at Madhabdev Nagar in Gosala, the Kamrup Metro district administration today served notices to the residents of the area asking them to shift to a safer place.
Nearly 500 families are residing in the area, where the main road was today blocked by a chunk of earth that caved in from the nearby hill and fell on the road.
The district administration will set up a temporary shelter for the people residing in the hilly areas vulnerable to landslide.
�We have already marked the landslide-prone areas and served notices to the people to vacate their houses till the monsoon over. We will set up relief camps if the people agree to live in them after vacating their houses,� Kamrup Metro DC Biswajit Pegu said.
�Five families in Madhabdev Nagar area have been shifted to a safer place today,� a source in the district administration added.
However, a resident of Madhabdev Nagar said shifting to a safer place is not possible when there is a total lockdown in place. It is far from easy, he pointed out, when there are no relatives or friends at a comfortable distance, and even if there are such people in their vicinity, no one is likely to welcome them during this phase of the pandemic.
�There can be a massive landslide in our area very soon. It poses a great danger to a number of families residing in it,� the resident added.
The latest incidents of landslides have terrorised the people residing in the hilly areas of Guwahati, as two women have already lost their lives in a matter of just four days.
Kamrup Metro ADC Chinmoy Nath along with DDMA officials visited the landslide-hit area in Madhabdev Nagar. Meanwhile, the Circle Officers, and officials from the PWD and the Soil Conservation departments, among others, also visited the city areas vulnerable to landslide and tried to increase the awareness of the people living there.
�We are also taking help from NGOs to sensitise the public on the issue,� a source in the district administration said.
