Machines for detection of COVID-19

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, May 2 - The Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Takyelpat, on Friday handed over one RNA extractor kit and one Real-Time PCR to the Medical Superintendent of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

These instruments were provided at the request of the RIMS to supplement the existing VRDL facilities for detection of COVID-19 due to the likelihood of return of stranded persons to Manipur in batches. The RT-PCR is a laboratory method for detecting, tracking and studying the coronavirus. Each COVID-19 test requires one RNA extraction kit without which the RT-PCR test cannot be conducted under the current testing methods.

The present initiative was taken under the guidance of the Director of the IBSD, Prof Pulok K Mukherjee, who congratulated the RIMS team on rendering yeomans service in fighting the virus pandemic. The IBSD is ready to extend all help with the resources available at the institute, for fighting COVID-19, Prof Mukherjee added.

The IBSD had earlier lent one R-T PCR to the JNIMS and other items for testing COVID-19 to the State Health Department. It has also distributed hand sanitisers to media persons, police and sanitary workers of the Imphal Municipal Council.
