By Correspondent

HAFLONG, Feb 17 The Lumding-Silchar BG conversion works, which have immense significance for south Assam and the neighbouring States of Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram, are all set to be completed in the stipulated time.

Chief Administrative Officer Ajit Pandit, Chief Engineer RP Ginger and Deputy Chief Engineer JK Chowdhary of the NF Railway stated this during their inspection near Rekho village on Monday. They told this correspondent that earlier there were three most critical spots between Jatinga and New Harangajao, but now all the hurdles have been removed and the construction works are progressing on a war footing.

Protection works have already been completed near Rekho village and the laying of lines will start from next week. Since the works at the Silchar section are almost complete, we are planning to run a locomotive within the first week of March. We are confident of completing the BG conversion works up to Silchar within March 31, the NF Railway officials maintained.

For the completion of the project, the cooperation of the district administrations and the people is also important. Bandh calls also hamper work. The NF Railway officials appealed to the administrations to ensure that during bandhs, the BG conversion works are not get affected.

The Lumding-Silchar BG conversion project, which commenced in 1996, has drawn strong criticism from several quarters for frequent delays and missed deadlines.
