By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 6 - Larsen & Toubro Limited will construct seven cancer hospitals in the State. The multinational conglomerate was given the work order yesterday following the tender process as they emerged as the lowest bidders.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said the seven hospitals will be built in the first phase at a cost of Rs 736 crore. The new hospitals will come up in Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Barpeta, Jorhat and Darrang districts, while the one in Guwahati will be upgraded.

The hospitals are an initiative of the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, a joint partnership between the Government of Assam and the Tata Trusts. It was set up in December 2017 to create a three-level cancer grid in the State. The foundation stones of the first phase hospitals will be laid in August.
