Low registration rate of construction workers in State

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 4 - There are mainly three reasons why registration rate of construction workers is low in the State. These reasons are lack of awareness amongst the stakeholders, non-availability of online registration mechanism and apprehension on loss of wage by workers coming for registration.

This was revealed in a written reply made by Labour Minister Sanjoy Kishan in the Assembly to a question by MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed.

He said that at present the number of registered construction workers in Assam is 2,62,953. On the other hand, the Assam Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board has engaged 71 contractual employees and placed them under the registering officer at field level to assist in workers registration.

In addition to the engagement of contractual employees, district-wise awareness and spot registration drives are being undertaken, Kishan said in his reply. He further informed that till January 30 this year, the State government accumulated Rs 1159.77 as labour cess and in the last ten years the government has disbursed Rs 1,42,45,41,718 under different labour welfare schemes.
