GUWAHATI, Oct 17 - Two low-pressure areas formed over the Bay of Bengal are causing the day temperatures to shoot up beyond the normal in many places over the northeast region during October, said Sunit Das, a scientist at the Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) here today.
While the first of the �low-pressure areas� formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal on October 1 and persisted till October 5, the second low-pressure system formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal on October 10 and it subsequently concentrated into a �Depression� and crossed Andhra Pradesh coast on October 13.
These two weather systems have practically obliterated moisture incursion in lower levels to the northeastern region from the Bay of Bengal. Moreover, partly cloudy conditions were observed in most parts of the region during this period. Under such circumstances, maximum temperatures shot up in most parts of the region beyond the normal during the 1st half of the current month, said Das.
Between October 1 and October 16, rainfall activity over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam�Meghalaya Meteorological Subdivisions was normal, whereas it was deficit over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura Meteorological Subdivision. Arunachal Pradesh and Assam�Meghalaya Meteorological Subdivisions respectively received 105.8 mm and 88.3 mm of rainfall, thus both the subdivisions recording a departure of below 19 per cent from the normal.
On the other hand, the Meteorological Subdivision of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura received 57.4 mm of rainfall during this period, recording a departure of below 50 per cent from normal.
Between October 1 and October 16, the Guwahati airport recorded above normal maximum temperatures for 15 days, which is the highest number of days among the India Meteorology Department (IMD) stations in the northeast region during this period, whereas Dhubri recorded the least number of days with above normal temperature and it was for two days. The Guwahati airport, Dibrugarh airport and North Lakhimpur airport are the weather stations of Assam, which recorded 5 degrees Celsius or more above normal temperatures during the period.
Dibrugarh and North Lakhimpur recorded 5 degrees Celsius or more above normal temperatures for six days each, while at Guwahati airport, similar development was recorded on four days.
It needs to be mentioned here that during the period, the Guwahati airport, Dibrugarh airport and North Lakhimpur airport recorded no rainfall for 13 days, nine days and 10 days respectively, said the RMC scientist.
