GUWAATI, Sept 19 � Hosting the prestigious Bordoloi Trophy tournament has perhaps become a mere formality for the Guwahati Sports Association (GSA).
Like last year, this year also, the organisers have decided to hold the 61st edition of the championship among the NE teams. In 2010, teams from Bangladesh and Nepal took part in the meet and played in the final while last year it was an all-Shillong final where Royal Wayhingdoh defeated Langsning.
This year, apart from three Shillong teams � Royal Wayhingdoh, Lalsning, Rangdajied along with Nagaland Police and Assam Rifles soccer teams � all the other eight teams are from Assam in the 12-team championship.
Altogether six teams � NF Railway Sports Association, Sunrise Athletic Club, Dynamo Club, ASEB Sports Club, Gauhati Town Club and Green Valley Sports Club � are of GSA while Oil India Limited, Duliajan is the only State team outside the city. No State police team will be in action for the first time in Bordoloi Trophy.
The championship will kick start with the Sunrise-ASEB match on September 21.
Elaborating about the championship, GSA president Rana Goswami said this time all the matches will be played in the day at 2.30 pm.
Goswami confessed that the glamour of the once famous Bordoloi Trophy has fallen to an alarming low. Blaming the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for that, Goswami said, not only Bordoloi Trophy, but the condition of big tournaments like IFA Shield, DCM Trophy, Durand Cup, Rovers Cup are also very poor as far popularity is concerned.
The GSA president said due to the heavy schedule of AIFF official tournaments, the organisers of major trophies hardly get top teams of the country for their tournaments. He, however, revealed that from next year onwards they will try to organise the championship little earlier, during August-September, so that some top teams of the country can be included.
Veteran sports organisers CR Bhowmick will inaugutrate the meet on Friday at 2.30 pm.
GSE general secretary Ibocha Singh, football secretary Sajal Sengupta, officials Anjali Khound, Zeherul Haque, Bablu Choudhury were also present in the press conference.
Sing and Sengupta also elaborated about the organisational part of the meet. Organisations like OIL, ONGC, SBI, Rose Valley are likely to provide financial assistance for hosting the meet where AIFF will referees wil conduct the matches.
