Lou Majaw nominated for Bhupen Hazarika award

SHILLONG, July 8 - Welknown musician, Lou Majaw, popular for his rendition of Bob Dylan numbers, has been nominated for this year�s �Bhupen Hazarika Award� by a Pune-based NGO.

The NGO, Sarhad, has been conferring the �Bhupen Hazarika Award� to personalities from the North East for their outstanding contribution in diverse fields at the national and international level.

This year the selection committee of Sarhad chose Majaw for his contribution in the field of music. Born in Mawlai here, in 1947, Majaw joined various bands during the 70s and 80s. One of the most successful bands of Majaw was the Great Society. Now, Majaw has his band known as Lou Majaw and Friends.

A press release said that over the years Sarhad has conferred the �Bhupen Hazarika Award� to eminent personalities like film-maker, Jhanu Barua, theatre director, Ratan Thiyam and journalist, Samudra Gupta Kashyap.

The award consists of a memento, certificate and a cash of Rs 51,000. The award would be handed over to Majaw at a ceremony in Pune this October.
