Lokabondhu Day observed at BBCI

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Sept 4 - Lokabondhu Day was observed at the Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) here on Friday where floral wreathes were placed at the statue of Dr Bhubaneswar Borooah on the institute premises, said a press release.

In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, a big gathering was avoided to mark the occasion. To raise funds for free treatment of childhood cancer patients, a campaign called Abhinivesa - will to live was launched on the occasion. Bhanu Gogoi, a retired school teacher from Sivasagar donated a sum of one lakh rupees towards the childhood cancer treatment fund. Few more individuals have donated for the cause.

It may be noted that donations to BBCI are exempted from income tax under Income Tax Act Section 80G. Recently, the World Health Organisation selected BBCI as one of the 11 centres for the South East Asia Regional Practice Network for childhood cancer services.

BBCI also provides free food and accommodation to childhood cancer patients and their parents at the St Jude India Child Care Centre within the institute.

A newsletter compiled by Dr Gautam Sharma was released on the occasion.

According to the same press release, in view of COVID-19, many cancer patients are finding it difficult to come to BBCI for regular post-treatment check-up. The management of BBCI therefore launched tele-consultation services for various departments for five days a week from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Two cervical cancer patients from Dergaon and Barpeta joined for the inaugural tele-consultation services.

During the lockdown approximately 5,000 patients were provided telephonic consultation, the release added.
