Lok Sabha hails Hima Das

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, July 18 - Lok Sabha today congratulated athlete Hima Das for winning a gold medal in a track event at the recently-concluded IAAF World Under-20 Championships at Tampere, Finland.

As soon as the House assembled for business here this morning, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan after making obituary reference congratulated Hima Das for winning the 400 metre race event. Describing her feat as commendable, the Speaker said Hima Das comes from a small village in Assams Nagaon district and belongs to a farmers family. She has earned laurels for the country, the Speaker said.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha witnessed some interruptions as Congress MP Ripun Bora sought to pass a resolution congratulating Hima Das. One reference should be made, he said trying to draw the attention of the Chairman.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu asked Bora to give a notice and meet him. I will allow you, he said.

Congress MP Anand Sharma then intervened amid interruptions and said it is the achievement of an Assamese girl. However, the Chairman responded that she is an Indian girl. The entire country is happy about it. Even I have tweeted about it. But, it should be sent to us and then there is the most respectable way of the House conveying it, not arguing like this, he said.

Later, Congress members Ripun Bora and Bhubaneswar Kalita met the Chairman in his chamber and it was decided that the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad will make a mention in the House tomorrow.
