Lok Adalats to settle motor accident claims

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 19 - Chief Justice (Acting) of the Gauhati High Court, Justice K Sreedhar Rao has devised a mechanism to organise daily Lok Adalats in the Motor Accident Claims Tribunals of Kamrup district as a pilot project. Justice Rao is also a Patron-in-Chief of the Assam State Legal Service Authority, stated an official press release here.

Daily Lok Adalats are expected to reduce the case load of Motor Accident Claims Tribunals drastically. At present, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunals of Kamrup district have nearly 10,000 claim cases pending.

The judges of the tribunals will head the Lok Adalats. Experienced judicial officers will be engaged as facilitators to accelerate settlement among the parties. There will be one Lok Adalat on every working day and it will take up accident claim cases against a particular insurance company.

Justice Rao has already formulated detailed guidelines for settlement of motor accident claim cases in Lok Adalats after consultation with all the stakeholders.

Justice T Vaiphei, Executive Chairman of the Assam State Legal Services Authority, will formally inaugurate the daily Lok Adalats tomorrow in the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal No. 1 at Ulubari, Guwahati, added the press release.
