ITANAGAR, May 25 - Due to incessant rainfall in the district since the last two days, the water level in the Lohit river is rising rapidly and is flowing 0.10 metre above the danger level, prompting the district authorities to shift people from vulnerable places to safer locations.
The water level of the tributaries of Lohit river such as Tezu Nallah, Denning Nallah, Sukha Nallah and Digaru have also swelled up steadily because of the past two days� heavy rainfall.
As reported by the WRD Department of Tezu, the 15 metre Gabion wall near Machuwa camp at Tezu Khola and 113.40 metre wire crated guide wall near Jhalukbari area have been damaged by the turbulent flood waters of Lohit river.
Meanwhile, Lohit district�s flood monitoring team consisting of Assistant Commissioner Sunny Singh, Extra Assistant Commissioner Rebecca Tayeng, District Disaster Management Officer Damchin Norbu, District Fisheries Development Officer L Kamchi and others visited all the flood-prone areas of Tezu Circle and took stock of the ground situation.
Apart from shifting 18 people from 28th Mile Machuwa camp to a safer location, the team alerted all the settlers of the low-lying areas asking them to be vigilant and prepare in advance for shifting in case of inundation.
Two relief camps have been identified and kept in readiness for shifting of people in the event of severe flooding.
The EACs of Wakro and Sunpura have been directed to take necessary preventive measures in their respective administrative jurisdictions, while the District Medical Officer has been asked to take preventive steps to mitigate water-borne diseases.
