Lockdown compounds misery of Tinsukias lemon farmers

By Correspondent

DOOMDOOMA, Aug 19 - Several villages viz., Bogoribari, Thepabari, Mosbari, Kasutup, Simanta Tengapani etc., of Tinsukia district in upper Assam situated along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border are known as Lemon Village as the farmers of these villages produce a large number of lemons every year and earn a handsome amount. This year too the production of lemons in these villages is in abundance.

But, due to the outbreak of the pandemic and the consequent lockdown, the farmers are facing a lot of problems in transporting their produce to the markets. Similarly, the vegetable merchants are also facing problems in coming to these villages to collect the produce. Moreover, continuous rains in this part of the country have also multiplied their misery.

Under such a condition, mature lemons are rotting in the fields. Though some farmers are bringing their lemons to the markets in various places, they are not getting appropriate prices. Moreover, due to lockdown the transportation cost of the products has also doubled.

The farmers here have urged Agriculture Minister Atul Bora to take some immediate and special measures for their benefit.
