Locals oppose use of Latasil playground

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 A section of citizens of Guwahati have raised objection to the use of the Latasil playground for functions like Independence Day and Republic Day reasoning that such programmes cause immense inconvenience to the local residents and the commuters.

One such citizen Mallika Baruah, Lamb Road, Latasil pointed out that the mentioned playground is primarily meant for holding sports events and sports training.

It may be mentioned here that these citizens have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Secretary of the State intimating their dissatisfaction. Urging the Chief Secretary to take necessary action in this connection, the memorandum has suggested that Independence Day and Republic Day functions should instead be held at the historic Judges Field.

It might be recalled that on December 31st last year, a public meeting was held at the Latasil field demanding shifting of these functions in greater interest of the public and the sports fraternity.

A few years back, the youths of the area developed the Latasil field with the help of the government. A committee named Latasil Field Development Committee was formed with the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro) as chairperson. The committee passed a resolution to preserve the field for sports and annual Bihu and Durga Puja only barring all other activities, said Baruah observing that the city which was developing at a rapid pace now had less space for young sportsmen.

Baruah said that the Judges Field was more appropriate for holding the Independence Day and Republic Day functions as it had a history. The first Independence Day was celebrated at Judges Field with Gopinath Bordoloi unfurling the National Flag. Historically, the Judges Field has been used for State functions, reminded Baruah.

The memorandum, signed by many prominent senior citizens including Kumudeswar Hazarika has insisted on preserving of the Latasil playground for sports activities.
