Liverpool, Chelsea win first matches of season

By The Assam Tribune

LONDON, Aug 21 (AP): Liverpools 11-year wait for a Premier League victory at Arsenal ended on Saturday, and Chelsea rallied against West Bromwich Albion to give Andre Villas-Boas his first win in charge.

Luis Suarez and Raul Meireles came off the bench to inspire Liverpool to a 2-0 win after Arsenal was reduced to 10 men when Emmanuel Frimpong received a second booking for a rash challenge on Lucas Leiva.

Aaron Ramsey inadvertently deflected in Liverpools opener and Suarez netted the second in stoppage time against an Arsenal side depleted by injuries and suspensions.

We live under circumstances where every defeat is an absolutely a disgrace and an earthquake, said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose side drew its opener last weekend. We are very disappointed that we lost the game, but we are at the start of the season.

Chelsea, which also opened with a draw, beat West Brom 2-1 after Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka scored in the second half to wipe out Shane Longs fourth-minute goal.

In the northeast derby, Newcastle won 1-0 at Sunderland, while Alex McLeishs first home game as Aston Villa manager ended in a 3-1 victory over Blackburn.

Two newly promoted sides picked up their first points, with Queens Park Rangers winning 1-0 at Everton and Swansea drawing 0-0 against Wigan.
