UDALGURI, Nov 25 - �After Prof Leel Bahadur Chhetri, who was honoured with covetous Padma Shri award this year, it is now our demand to award Tarapati Upadhyaya of Udalguri district, an octogenarian literary figure, an awardee of Sahitya Akademi (2010) in translation and an author of 21 books in Nepali and Assamese till date and a forerunner in Nepali language recognition movement during the 70s, with the Padma Shri award,� said Durga Khatiorah, president of Asom Nepali Sahitya Sabha (ANSS) on Tuesday while addressing a public congregation held on the occasion of public felicitation to Tarapati Upadhyaya here at Udalguri Bathou Mandir auditorium hall.
The ANSS president expressed satisfaction over the wide-scale public felicitation to a literary figure, an academician and social worker like Upadhyaya in a grand way organised by the public of Udalguri district and termed it as a symbol of unity among various ethnic linguistic groups in the region.
The felicitation programme, chaired by Pushpadhar Bastola, Principal of Udalguri HS School, was also addressed by Hareswar Kalita, president of Udalguri district Sahitya Sabha and Nilakanta Goyary, former president of Udalguri district committee of Bodo Sahitya Sabha, among others. A commemorative book on the life and works of Tarapati Upadhyaya, edited by Lakshman Adhikari, was also released by ANSS president Durga Khatiorah while Hareswar Kalita, president of Udalguri district committee of Asam Sahitya Sabha released Drupadraj Nandini Draupadi in Assamese authored by Tarapati Upadhyaya. Nilakanta Goyary released the translated version of Bharatiya Nepali Jati by Tarapati Upadhyaya in original Nepali into Assamese by Lakshman Adhikari.
It is to be noted that the literary figures of Assamese, Nepali and Bodo languages of the region supported and decided to send their proposals to the Union government to award Padma Shri to the iconic literary guardian like Tarapati Upadhyaya.
