Lions launches drinking water project at ISBT

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 20 - To meet the necessity of pure and clean drinking water at the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) on the outskirts of the city, Lions Club of Gauhati on Monday dedicated a free cold drinking water project to the public.

It needs to be mentioned here that in the last one year, the voluntary organization has put up two drinking water outlets, one at Fancy bazaar and another in the Sarabbatti area of the city.

The need for drinking water for the passengers at ISBT was long felt and the project has been welcomed by the citizens. About 300 buses carrying about 9000 passengers transit from this mega bus terminus daily on an average. Drinking water scarcity had caused great inconvenience to the passengers.

The unique feature of this project is that it is comprehensive in nature and sustainable.

It is comprehensive because it includes the water source. We have planted a deep tubewell exclusively for the purpose. We have connected the plumbing lines. We have put up a separate filtration plant, separate overhead tank, and coolers at two locations at the bus terminus, said a member of the organization. The total cost of the project has come as donation from a few members of the organization. The organization has not obtained any grants or aid from any government or non-government body.

It is a sustainable project because the security of the equipment has been ensured by the ISBT under a Memorandum of Understanding. The regular maintenance of the equipments will be taken care by Lions Club of Gauhati with special attention from the donors, said the member.
