Lifting Z-plus security a ploy: Mahanta

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 29 Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today alleged that the move to withdraw his Z-plus category security was a ploy to restrict his political movement ahead of the State Assembly elections next year.

Bringing the State Government under the scanner, he told the media here that the Union Home Ministry took the decision hastily after an informal recommendations from the State government.

According to my information, a secret meeting was held at a secured place in which an Assamese intellectual was closely associated, who advised Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his team to ask the Union Government to withdraw my Z-plus security cover, Mahanta said, refusing to divulge any further.

He alleged that a series of meetings had been held against him by the vested interest groups since August of this year. The withdrawal of security would not just restrict my movement, it can also lead to my assassination, he said.

Yesterday, the Gauhati High Court after hearing a writ petition filed by Mahanta, passed an interim order directing the Union government not to withdraw the Z-plus security cover given to Mahanta since 1997.

Mahanta further said that if Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi felt that the State had no more law and order problem, he should create an example by removing his Z-plus security cover.
