Legend Dr Bhupen Hazarika remembered

JORHAT, Nov 5 - The Jorhat district administration on Thursday paid homage to Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his ninth death anniversary.

In a function organised at the conference hall of Jorhat Deputy Commissioner�s office complex to offer tributes to the legend, Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Roshni A Korati garlanded the photograph of Dr Hazarika and also lit a lamp before the photo. Speaking on the occasion, Korati while paying tributes to the Bharat Ratna recipient, recalled his immense contributions in the field of music and culture. She said that people should emulate his ideals of fostering brotherhood and love among people by the medium of music and movies.

Senior district administration officials and employees of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner�s office attended the function. Our Correspondent from Doomdooma adds: Rich tributes were paid to Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika in Doomdooma on the occasion of his 9th death anniversary on Thursday.

The Doomdooma Sakha Sahitya Sabha (DSSS) organised a special programme at its office premises. DSSS president Bimala Baruah lit the ceremonial lamp in front of the portrait of Sudhakantha, while Tinsukia Zila Sahitya Sabha president Arjun Baruah initiated the shradhanjali programme.

Many people participated in the programme anchored by DSSS secretary Deben Deka. A few evergreen songs of the Sudhakantha were presented in the programme by local artistes, including Ajoy Khataniar, Anamika Lahkar and others. Poet Jonali Deka recited a self-composed poem.

Tributes to the Sudhakantha were also paid at various educational institutions here on the occasion of his death anniversary.

A Correspondent from Nagaon adds: Along with rest of the State, several socio-cultural organisations in the district paid tributes to Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his ninth death anniversary today.

Several organisations in the district held competitions among the students on Dr Hazarika�s evergreen songs in various places of the district.

Asom Silpi Kanon, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Asom Jatiayatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad, Dimaruguri Anchalik Samity, the district unit of Asam Sahitya Sabha and many other organisations remembered the great soul and also conducted various musical contests across the district.

Asom Silpi Kanon organised a meeting at the auditorium of Nehru Yuva Kendra here. Senior journalist Rajen Borkataki, the chief adviser to the organisation, inaugurated the programme while Biju Saikia, Prabhat Bora, Minu Hazarika, Mrigen Sarma and Gautom Bhattacharya took part in the event as key resource persons and spoke on the life and contributions of Dr Hazarika.

Similarly, the district unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad paid floral tributes at the portrait of Dr Hazarika at the Nagaon Swahid Bhavan today and conducted various competitions among students on Dr Hazarika�s evergreen songs and music.

The district unit of Asam Sahitya Sabha also paid floral tributes to Dr Hazarika at its district office in the town.

Our Correspondent from Sivasagar adds: Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika�s 9th death anniversary was observed by Dikhowporia Yuva Sangha in a solemn function held near Dr Hazarika�s statue at Dolmukh Chariali today.

Ratan Saikia, president, Dikhowporia Yuva Sangha, lit the earthen lamp near the statue and other members paid floral tributes and sang songs composed by Dr Hazarika.

Ratu Das, secretary of the Sangha, anchored the event.

The Rongpur Sahitya Sabha observed the day at the Lakshminath Bezbaroa Park where members of the Sabha lit lamps near the statue and sang Dr Hazarika�s songs.

Dipali Bhatta Baruah, president, Rongpur Sahitya Sabha, lit the ceremonial lamp while Manoj Kumar Borthakur, former president of the Sabha, said the generations of Assamese have learnt to pronounce Assamese words with proper accent only by listening to Dr Hazarika�s songs.

ANN Service from Patacharkuchi adds: The Pathsala Sahitya Sabha on Thursday released three books at a function held at the Sahitya Sabha auditorium in the presence of a large number of book lovers.

The Sahitya Sabha observed the death anniversary of Dr Bhupen Hazarika and also distributed the Golokeswar Goswami Memorial Prize to the students obtaining the highest marks from Bajali subdivision in the last HSLC examination. The meeting was presided over by Prafulla Kumar Goswami, president of the branch. The books � Pachandar Prabandha (selected articles) by Ratneswar Talukdar, Mahabharatar Saru Sura Katha by Dhirendra Talukdar and Kabitar Kuhi by Kailash Chandra Das � were released by Dr Mukunda Sarma, Principal of Bhabanipur Anchalik College, and Sampurnananda Talukdar, Principal in-charge of erstwhile Bajali College.

Earlier, floral tributes were paid at the portrait of Bhupen Hazarika by Krishna Roy, producer of Abahan Theatre, while the portrait of Golokeswar Goswami was garlanded by his wife Nilima Devi.

Mukunda Sarma and Krishna Roy delivered speeches on the life and works of Bhupen Hazarika and his influence on the society, while Atul Kalita, secretary of the Pathsala Sahitya Sabha, also delivered a speech. Manashi Das and Jimani Kalita, two meritorious students who secured highest marks in Assamese in the last HSLC examination, were presented with citations and cash awards in the memory of Golokeswar Goswami.
