Legal awareness camp for women at Hailakandi

By CORRESPONDENT

HAILAKANDI, July 3 - Hailakandi is bracing up to hold a legal awareness camp for women during the last part of this month.

The camp, to be organised by the Assam State Commission for Women, earlier slated for July 10, had to be deferred because the administration is busy in assessing flood-related damages and rehabilitation of thousands of people displaced by the seasonal deluge.

A meeting of the District-Level Women Cell held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan on Thursday decided to move the member secretary of Assam State Commission for Women for conducting the legal awareness camp during the last part of July.

Khan underscored the importance of involving NGOs for generating awareness among the womenfolk, particularly in rural areas, about the rights and privileges guaranteed to them by the Constitution. He called for selection of genuine and active NGOs for carrying out awareness programmes in urban and rural areas of the district.

Additional SP (Headquarter) Jagadish Das stressed on organising awareness programmes in prominent places across the district by involving ASHA workers, SHGs and other women organisations.

Members of the District-Level Women Cell requested the Superintendent of Police to take appropriate action against sexual harassment of women.

The meeting decided to extend invitation to the public representatives to attend the programme.

Earlier, Assistant Commissioner and member secretary of the District-Level Women Cell, RL Changsan explained the purpose of the meeting.
