Leftist leader Sailen Medhi passes away

GUWAHATI, July 10 - Eminent lawyer and Leftist leader of yesteryears Sailen Medhi passed away at his Santipur residence around 2:25 pm today due to old-age ailments. He was 87.

Medhi, who was elected as a legislator from the Jalukbari constituency in 1967 and was associated with the RCPI, was among the prominent Leftist leaders of his times. He was also an associate of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha and helped him a lot during Rabha�s fugitive days as a revolutionary.

Medhi joined the Gauhati High Court in 1962 and rose to eminence as a lawyer in quick time. He represented the Gauhati High Court Bar Association on a number of occasions at meetings and events abroad. He also met Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro during his foreign visits.

Medhi leaves behind his wife and a host of relatives. His only son had predeceased him.
