Leader of Opposition visits violence-hit Hailakandi

HAILAKANDI, Oct 16 - The leader of the Opposition of the State Assembly, Debabrata Saikia has urged the district administration to take initiative to usher in peace among the villagers in violence-hit Nitainagar of Hailakandi district in south Assam.

Saikia on Tuesday visited the entire Laskarbazar area of Nitainagar along with the members of Hailakandi district Congress committee led by its president Joynal Uddin Laskar and had a discussion with the people. He also met the Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, Keerthi Jalli at her office chamber and requested to constitute a peace committee in order to bring peace among the people.

With the arrest of one more person, the number of arrests has gone up to 19 in regard to mob violence. Hailakandi Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath informed that more persons connected with the violence will be arrested and they are still investigating the video footages, pictures and sources to ascertain the criminals and also said that some criminals escaped immediately after the incident of violence. He reiterated that no innocent person will be harassed.

It may be mentioned here that 12 policemen and some people were injured and a vehicle was burnt and a police vehicle was damaged in mob violence on Friday night at Laskar bazar in Nitainagar village of Hailakandi district.

Some of the villagers alleged in front of Saikia that the situation on Friday worsened when the 9-member team from Sonai allegedly tried to kidnap a boy. On the basis of the FIR lodged by the father of the boy, all the nine members, including a police constable was arrested on Saturday.

Laskarbazar, a weekly cattle market on Tuesday wore a deserted look. All the shops and market were closed. A housewife of the locality said that most of the male members of the village fled to unknown destination fearing arrest.

Later, talking to mediapersons, Saikia condemned the ruling BJP for giving false promise in all the aspects.
