Lawyers urge HC Bar Association to clarify stand

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 6 As the arrest of NDFB leader Ranjan Daimary has thrown up a new debate among the legal fraternity of the State, a section of the lawyers has appealed the Gauhati High Court Bar Association to call an urgent meeting of the Bar Association and clarify its stand before the people of the State.

With the recent development that took place after the arrest of Daimary vis-a-vis the stand taken by the lawyers of the Gauhati Lawyers Association, the situation demands a discussion in the Gauhati High Court Bar Association on the burning issue, the letter written to GHCBA mentioned.

The letter, signed by more than 70 members of the legal fraternity mentioned that a clear stand on the part of the Bar Association is necessary to keep the social fabric of the State intact.

Following the October 30 serial blasts that also ripped apart the CJM court campus, Kachari, the Gauhati Lawyers Association (GLA) declared its stand against the culprits behind the blasts and urged the lawyers not to appear on behalf of the accused of the blasts on moral grounds.

However, after the arrest of Ranjan Daimary the legal camp feels the necessity to discuss the issue thoroughly and find out a practical solution.

An urgent general body meeting of the GHCBA is necessary to discuss the emergent situation, arrive on a common consensus and declare it formally to clear all the doubts, said advocate Utpal Rajbonshi, a member of the association.
