Lawyers campaign to denounce violence

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 27 - The second anniversary of the serial blasts that killed dozens of people in several parts of Assam and wounded many more will be observed in a solemn programme held in the city. It would be marked by a 'peace campaign rally' launched at a site adjacent to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's campus, Guwahati, where one of the blasts took place on October 30, 2008. This was announced at a press meet held at the CJM's office today.

The Lawyers' Association, Guwahati, has come to support the programme which has been initiated by Digital Expo 2010 and Business Reporter. The event, interestingly, is organized by an entity called LOGO Innovation.

Secretary of the Lawyers' Association, Guwahati, Amitabh Thakuria told the media that the campaign would be a call for peace and denouncement of terrorism. "We hope the public join us in our campaign for peace, and condemnation of terror acts as we have seen enough violence already," he mentioned.

Remembering those who had died in the blasts, including lawyers, Thakuria noted that October 30 would be a day to pay homage to the departed and express solidarity with the bereaved families. "It would also be an opportunity for people to show a united stand against terrorism and violence," he added.

President of the association, Pulin Goswami also spoke about the need for peace and harmony and appealed for everyone so that the peace campaign is successful. "Terrorism has never been able to achieve anything in any place in the world," he emphasized.

A member of Northeast Computer Traders' Association, spoke that his association has lost a member in a blast, and therefore felt obliged to support the peace rally and protest the gruesome acts of terrorists.

Significantly, the peace campaign will start with financial assistance being provided to the victims of the blasts, to be followed by a 'hug for peace campaign'.

Thereafter, the peace campaign rally will pay tributes to those who had lost their lives at Panbazar, Ganeshguri and CJM complex blast sites. An all faith prayer meet will be organized at the CJM complex at 5.30 pm that day.
