SHILLONG, Dec 1 � New Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Kulbir Kishan after taking over charge here yesterday said the challenge ahead of him is the law and order situation, especially in Garo Hills region and the impending Assembly elections.
Krishan, who took over charge after much controversy in the appointment of the DGP following N Ramachandran�s retirement on October 31, said he would be visiting the Garo Hills region soon to assess the situation there. �I would be visiting the Garo Hills region in the coming days to assess the situation there,� he told the media.
Several militant groups, like the Achik National Volunteer Council, Garo National Liberation Army have created a huge law and order problem in Garo Hills and with Assembly elections scheduled next year the task is cut out for the security forces.
Krishan said he would be taking the assistance of the State Government and the Election Commission to face the challenges ahead. �It would be our endevour to cooperate with the Election Commission and ensure that the elections are held in a totally peaceful manner,� Krishan said.
Sending out a warning to the militants, he said, nobody would be allowed to dictate terms through violence. Krishan said militants must eschew violence and come forward for talks with their grievances, if any.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Government has finally put an end to the controversy surrounding the appointment of the DGP after two candidates for the post - B Kezo and Prem Singh � turned down the offer.
Kezo is a year away from retirement and decided to stay posted in his home town in Nagaland instead of being posted in Meghalaya as the DGP.
Prem Singh on the other hand communicated to the Government that he would rather prefer a Central deputation. Both have served as Meghalaya DGP for a brief period.
Krishan on the other hand was the DGP from February 2009 to May 2009 before he was unceremoniously removed following the collapse of NCP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance and the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance came to power.
