GUWAHATI, Nov 3 There was a delay of about a fortnight in the withdrawal of the monsoon from the NE region this time. However, sources in the Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) here maintain that there was no abnormality in this. There have been instances of the late withdrawal of monsoon from the region in the previous decades too, RMC sources said.
The India Meteorology Department (IMD) announced withdrawal of monsoon from the region on October 29. According to the IMD announcement, monsoon withdrew from the NE region on the evening of October 29. The normal date of withdrawal of monsoon from the region is October 15, sources said.
The delay in the withdrawal of monsoon this time is attributed to continuous rainfall activities, availability of moisture in upper air and the impact of the cyclonic circulation that formed over the East-Central Bay of Bengal and later entered Myanmar.
It needs mention here that the low pressure system that formed over the East-Central Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood on October 19, later turned into a cyclonic circulation on October 21 and became a severe cyclone on October 22. This severe cyclone entered Myanmar on October 23.
On October 25 and 26, there were rainfall activities over the NE region due to some weather systems prevailing over the region, said sources.
In 2004 and 2005, monsoon withdrew from the region on October 11, while in 2007, the withdrawal took place on October 22. The next year, monsoon withdrew from the region on October 14. Last year, the withdrawal took place on October 20, said the sources.
