Last rites of SP Baruah performed

GUWAHATI, June 30 � The last rites of freedom fighter, social worker and senior journalist Siba Prasad Baruah were performed at the Bhoothnath crematorium this afternoon in the presence of his well-wishers and family members.

Baruah parsed away last night around 9:50 at his residence located at Bhangagarh area. He was born on May 27, 1913.

He leaves behind his wife, two sons, two daughters and a host of relatives.

Earlier today, the mortal remains of the veteran leader were taken to the office of Mukti Jujaru Santha at Rupnagar where floral tributes were paid to the departed soul.

Those attending the funeral included president of Asam Sahitya Sabha Rong Bong Terang, former Union Minister Renuka Devi Borkotoky, chairman of Assam Tribune Group of newspapers T G Baruah, poet Eli Ahmed and senior journalist Dhirendra Nath Chakrabarty amongst a host of other noted personalities.

Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakraborty and former Minister Biraj Sarma and former Asam Sahitya Sabha president Kanak Sen Deka visited the residence of the freedom fighter to convey condolences to the family members.

Meanwhile, Assam Governor while condoling the demise of Baruah, said, �It is an irreparable loss for Assam whom he served with great devotion.�

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi condoled the death of the veteran leader, stating that Baruah�s contribution towards the society would always be remembered.

�He followed the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and fought in the interest of the State. His contributions, be it during the freedom struggle or as a social worker and a journalist would always be a source of inspiration for the next generation,� Gogoi said.

The Asam Sahitya Sabha, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and the Asom Gana Parishad too expressed condolences.
