MANGALDAI, Dec 30 - Just ahead of the publication of the first part of the draft NRC list, reports of large number of cases related to fake NRC documents pending at various police stations across the State have been reported.
Several hundred such cases filed by the Darrang NRC authority have remained pending in different police stations not only within the district, but also in some police stations outside the district. The district NRC authority has already lodged police complaints against a total of 1,326 such fraudulent cases.
We recorded a total of 1,326 cases during verification of legacy documents submitted along with application. After we cross-check with the issuing authority and on confirmation of authenticity, legal action follows, said Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati, NRC district nodal officer-cum-Additional Deputy Commissioner of Darrang.
A majority of the fake documents pertain to certificates of venture schools, besides birth certificates, family identity card or ration card and Electoral Photo-Identity Card (EPIC), added Bhagawati.
According to official information, till March the district NRC authority recorded a total of 424 such police complaints. Mangaldai Police Station recorded the maximum number of 153 cases followed by Dalgaon 79 , Dhula 68 , Sipajhar 60 and Kharupetia with 49 cases.
On April 20, 2016, 50 complaints were filed in Dalgaon Police Station. Similarly on January 24 last, 39 FIRs in connection with fake NRC documents were lodged in Mangaldai Police Station. On February 18 and March 15 last, several police complaints 22 and 18 respectively were lodged in Mangaldai Police Station.
Further, cases have already been registered in other police stations outside the district, including Mazbat, Kalaigaon, Tezpur etc.
On the basis of these complaints, police took action in around 20 cases and arrested 22 accused, including ASHA workers, village headmen, among others. The figure subsequently went up with more and more incidents of fake documents being detected during the NRC update process.
It can easily be surmised from the above that till date a large number of cases are still pending settlement across numerous police stations of the State.
