By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, March 15 A study has revealed that the production levels of crops in Assam and two other NE States do not provide the economics of scale for setting up of large food processing industries, except for pineapple.

The Centre had conducted a study through Guwahati-based North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Ltd. (NERAMAC) to assess the scope and potential of food processing industries in Assam, Mizoram and Tripura, said Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti.

As far as vegetables are concerned, crops like carrots, peas, tomatoes and ginger offer good scope for processing and value addition, subject to promoting commercial production in these crops, she added. The mega Food Park at Agartala is projected to cost Rs 87.45 crore.
