SHILLONG, April 18 Chief Minister DD Lapang this evening submitted his resignation to Congress president Sonia Gandhi as leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) and would submit his resignation as Chief Minster to the Governor later on Monday.
Sonia Gandhi has accepted Lapangs resignation after most of the Congress legislators demanded his ouster, Sayedullah Nongrum a senior Congressman told The Assam Tribune.
Sources said that Lapang would meet Governor, RS Mooshahary in the afternoon tomorrow and submit his resignation to dissolve the Council of Ministers and make way for his deputy Mukul Sangma to be the next Chief Minister.
21 out of 28 Congress legislators have unanimously lent support to Sangma projecting him as the new CLP leader, while demanding Lapangs resignation.
The CLP would meet on Monday evening for electing the new CLP leader. Lapang has stepped down gracefully and the process to elect Mukul Sangma as the new CLP leader would be held on Monday evening and then he would be elected as the next Chief Minister, Nongrum said.
Our Spl Correspondent from New Delhi adds: A crestfallen Chief Minister DD Lapang conceded defeat after he lost majority in the Congress Legislature Party. The Chief Minister told his party-men and AICC leadership that he is ready to quit. Mukul Sangma has the majority, an upset Lapang was quoted as having said.
I met the MLAs, most of who are camping in Delhi and I asked them, they said yes. I asked him to go ahead. I shall tell Congress president Sonia Gandhi about this, Lapang told newsmen
With majority of his MLAs having deserted his camp, Lapang said in a democracy the number counts.
I will meet the Congress president and accordingly I will resign, said Lapang. We will not fight for a chair, he said.
We will not burn our own house over family differences. We stand as one, he claimed.
Lapang, who met senior Congress leaders including political advisor to Congress president, Ahmed Patel and Oscar Fernandes among others, was told to expect the worst, as majority of Congress Legislative Party members have backed Sangma.
Lapang was advised to stay put in the capital until a final decision is taken by the Congress chief. The beleaguered Chief Minister was summoned by Party High command after the MLAs pulled the rug from right under his feet.
Sangma, who arrived here on Saturday along with 14 Congress MLAs, including ten dissidents, who had sought Lapangs ouster too has been meeting AICC leaders. The political drama reached a grand finale when 21 of the total 28 Congress MLAs on Friday night pledged unconditional support to him.
