Landslides claim 10 lives in Hailakandi, Karimganj dists

HAILAKANDI, May 18 - Altogether 10 persons died in separate landslide incidents in Hailakandi and Karimganj districts last night. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police personnel recovered the bodies from under the mud after battling for over 5 hours in heavy rains. Hailakandi district Deputy Commissioner Malay Bora, Additional Deputy Commissioner Amalendu Roy and Circle Officer (Lala) Madhumita Nath rushed to the spots.

The incidents in Hailakandi occurred at Ramchandi and Teracherra areas around 2.30 am.

At Teracherra, which is about 30 km from Hailakandi town, under Lala circle of Hailakandi district, four persons of the same family died in a landslide. The deceased have been identified as Safiqur Rahman Choudhury (20), Rushna Begum Choudhury (18), Abidur Rahman Choudhury (12) and Mujahidul Islam (2). Three other members of the family were also injured in the incident.

At Ramchandi, which is about 10 km from Hailakandi town, one Ramiz Uddin Laskar (8) died on the spot when mud crashed down on their house. Four members of the house were also injured.

The Hailakandi DC has sanctioned Rs 10,000 immediately for performing the last rites of the victims.

The dead bodies have been sent to the SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi for post mortem, while the injured persons are being treated at the same hospital.

In Karimganj district, five persons of the same family died in a landslide in Sonaicherra area under Ramkrishnanagar Police Station. Police personnel, who force rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies after digging through 7 feet of mud.

The deceased have been identified as Nitai Das (38), his wife Supriya (30), sons Nibhas Das (10) and Kunal Das (6) and daughter Mitali Das (13). The bodies have been taken to the Karimganj Civil Hospital for post mortem.

Meanwhile, the PWD road connecting Assam with Mizoram in Hailakandi district was snapped due to heavy landslides at four places last night.
