Land rights for indigenous people demanded

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 18 - Demanding land rights for the indigenous people of Assam, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYP) asked the Government to formulate a clear-cut land policy.

Land right is our birth right. Why has the Government, which came to power vowing to protect the community, land and foundation, failed to provide land pattas to the indigenous people, questioned AJYP working president Pradeep Kumar Bhuyan here on Friday.

The organisations president Kanak Hazarika and general secretary Kanak Chandra Bharali also slammed the new directives issued for obtaining land pattas. The new directives will infringe on the birthright of the people.

According to the new directives, an applicant will have to give an undertaking that he has no land in the State, they said, demanding withdrawal of the notification.
