Lakhwinder wins badminton crown

GUWAHATI, May 27 - Lakhwinder Pal Singh of Punjab clinched the singles title in the 41st All India Electricity Sports Control Board Badminton Tournament.

In the final played at the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here today, Lakhwinder defeated Vishnu Rajendran of Kerala 21-16, 21-16 in straight sets. Rajkumar of Punjab took the bronze medal defeating NR Ranjit of Kerala in the play off match.

In the keenly contested doubles final Kerala duo of Vishnu Rajendran and RN Ranjit got the better of Navadeep Singh and Md Saleem of Punjab 21-14, 17-21, 21-15. The Haryana pair of Surinder and Virender beat Karthik and Sridhar of Tamil Nadu in the play off match for the third position.

Earlier, Kerala beat Punjab 3-1 for the team title yesterday. Around 130 shuttlers from 22 State teams took part in the three-day championship which was organised by the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd, Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Ltd and Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd under the banner of Assam State Electricity Board Sports Club (ASEB SC).

In the closing function Pranab Bora, CGM HQ; SN Kalita CGM, Finance and Accounts; BK Duari, president of the ASEB SC and former State shuttler L Hemanta Singh gave away the prizes.
