By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, May 1 - Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police Rajveer Singh today appealed for peace and harmony among all sections of the society while prioritising proper checks on the spread of COVID-19.

Singh was responding to reporters at a press meet held in his office here this afternoon in the wake of an attack on the police on Thursday night, near a mosque at Nowboicha.

A police team was allegedly attacked by a group of people at Pandhowa under Nowboicha Police Station in Lakhimpur while they were asking the Imam of a mosque to limit the congregation for prayer inside the place of worship to three persons.

The attackers, who were not part of the congregation for namaz inside the mosque, pelted stones at the police team, injuring Nowboicha Police Station officer-in-charge Biswajeet Nath and damaging the police vehicle.

The incident created a tense situation in the area with hate-mongering on the social media with communal overtones.

The Lakhimpur SP today appealed to the public for calm and amity with the sole objective of maintaining peace and harmony in the society. He said the priority was to contain COVID-19 and control the spread of the disease.

The SP also warned the public not to spread hate-mongering on the social media by posting communal contents.

Singh also informed that 40 cases have been registered for communal postings on the social media in the district so far and called for presence of only 3 persons at places of worship.
