Lakhimpur police intensifies operations against drugs

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, July 4 - In a major operation, the Lahimpur police seized ganja weighing 17 kg from a vehicle on Tuesday evening at Khanajan under Silonibari Police Out Post.

The ganja was seized from a three-wheeler (registration number AS-07-C-8694) driven by one Phuleswar Chutia, and the narcotics were being carried by Dharani Das. The police team led by DSP (headquarters) Runa Neog along with Inspector-in-Charge of Silonibari Jitumoni Kalita also seized Rs 22,000 in cash.

This seizure of ganja comes after a series of successful operations by Lakhimpur police against crimes committed in the district. On June 20, a hardcore criminal wanted for a series of crimes including human trafficking in Charaimoria was nabbed. Known as Nigony (the Assamese word for mouse), the accused Bhola Gogoi alias Babu Gogoi was eluding the police for a long time, thereby earning the status of an urban legend.

He was wanted under the Arms Act, dacoity, theft and child trafficking. A team from Bogeenadi Police Station led by Officer-in-Charge Priyabrata Gogoi raided a house at Charaimoria where Bhola Gogoi was hiding and arrested him after chasing him for a distance in a paddy field. Besides other crimes, Bhola Gogoi was wanted in a child trafficking case in which he and one Anjana Basumatary kidnapped and trafficked a young girl in January this year to a person in Arunachal Pradesh. The girl was later rescued in April.

On June 21, Lakhimpur police arrested two inter-state robbers involved in a sensational robbery in North Lakhimpur recently. The robbers identified as Akshay Yadav and Ditesh Das from Bihar were arrested at Jakhalabandha and brought to Hojai. They were then handed over to Panbazar Police Station in Guwahati. From there, they were handed over to North Lakhimpur police.

Akshay and Ditesh were involved in robbery of Rs 2.2 lakh in cash from a woman in front of the State Bank of Indias North Lakhimpur branch on May 21. The woman, Malini Kakoty, was intercepted by the robbers in front of the bank branch and they snatched the money from her bag. The woman was dragged for more than 100 metres on the road by the motorcycle-borne Akshay and Ditesh before fleeing with the money.
