Lakhimpur erupts with protests against CAA notification

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Jan 11 - The entire Lakhimpur district today erupted with anger and protests over the notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act-2019 by the Central government. Angry crowds led by various organisations protested against the notification of the law by holding demonstrations, burning of effigies and protest torch marches.

At the district headquarters North Lakhimpur, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Parichad (AJYP) today took out a huge protest march from the playground of North Lakhimpur Govt HS School against the CAA. The protesting organisations burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in front of the Deputy Commissioners office at North Lakhimpur today. There was a minor scuffle between the police and security personnel and the protesting crowds when the former tried to douse the fire coming out from the burning effigies. This led the agitating crowd to shout slogans against police for a while. However the situation did not turn much serious following the scuffle.

The AJYCP also called a two-hour shut down in North Lakhimpur from 12 noon in protest of the CAA notification, which passed off peacefully. Later, in the evening the AASU took out protest torch marches across Lakhimpur district in association with 30 other ethnic organisations at North Lakhimpur, Lilabari, Nowboicha, Laluk, Bangalmora, Bihpuria, Narayanpur, Madhupur, Dhalpur, Simaluguri, Panigaon, Ghilamora, Dhakuakhana and Chauldhowa. Various socio-cultural organisations also took out demonstrations against the CAA notification with songs and poetry across Lakhimpur district today.
