NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Oct 26 - The Lakhimpur district administration adopted a unique way for the immersion of idols of Goddess Durga and other deities as per the NGT directives to protect the water of Ranganadi river from getting polluted on the Bijoya Dasami today. The district administration dug a long pit on the bank of the river Ranganadi filled with water where the idols were immersed as per the custom of Durga Puja celebrations. Today the immersion of the idols began at 11 am and concluded at 4 pm by 17 Durga Puja committees of North Lakhimpur at the immersion ghat in Ranganadi.
The district administration will fill up the pit following completion of the immersion. It may be mentioned that Ranganadi river has been polluted severely every year by immersion of idols during Durga Puja celebrations. The move by the district administration in saving the river from pollution has earned applause from various quarters including from the conservationists.
The idols of Durga and other deities this time also were made in Lakhimpur district as per the directives of National Green Tribunal (NGT). The NGT norms included no use of Plaster of Paris (PoP), artificial colours and maintaining a reduced height.
Earlier, Durga Puja celebrations passed off peacefully on the Navami day as the weather cleared following two daysof incessant rains in North Lakhimpur. People came out in large numbers on the penultimate day of the celebrations visiting the limited puja mandaps in North Lakhimpur.
