Lakhimpur bandh over party ticket

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, March 16 - A 12-hour bandh, called by supporters of Ghana Buragohain, who was denied party ticket by the Congress from the 111 Lakhimpur LAC, affected normal life in North Lakhimpur today.

The ruling Congress party had released the first list of its candidates for the ensuing Assembly polls, in which the name of Buragohain, a former MLA, does not figure. The party instead chose Dr Jay Prakash Das, president of the State Youth Congress. It may be mentioned that a protest march was taken out last evening by Buragohains supporters here. Last night, security personnel were deployed around Rajiv Bhawan here in anticipation of an intra-party confrontation.

The bandh, however, evoked mixed response. Though most shops and business establishments remained closed, government offices and courts functioned normally during the bandh. Vehicular traffic was also normal, while public transportation was partially affected by the bandh.

Supporters of Buragohain later declared a press release that they would field the ex-MLA as an Independent candidate for the Lakhimpur LAC.
